9 Headache & Migraine Hacks | Girl Talk Tuesday

One thing I’ve got plenty of experience with is headaches.  Listen, I’m not bragging about that experience…  I’m just saying that I know a thing or two about that nasty word.  And migraines?  Girl, I got you there too.  If you’ve never had a migraine, count yourself blessed. Very, very blessed.

I felt like Girl Talk Tuesday was the best time for us to tackle this topic since we talk about things like period cramps and small breasts.  A lot of times headaches and migraines are hormonal.  Other times they’re hereditary, a result of your environment or a plethora of other reasons.  If you read my birth control blog post, then you know that I went through a dark period of time when migraines literally took over my life.  I learned so much about my body and how to deal with headaches/migraines during that time.  I wanted to share the wealth with any of my sisters who also suffer.

9 Headache and Migraine Hacks:

  1. Pain Killers.  This one is a duh, I know.  But the reason it’s #1 on my list is to not wait until it’s too late to take something for the pain.  Many times I feel like I can just deal with the pain, because it’s no that bad…  Then, all of sudden, the pain takes a quick turn and I’m in severe pain.  Listen to your body.  Take a small dose to knock it out before it gets worse if you know that you have a tendency to get worse before you get better.  I personally use either Advil or Excedrin Migraine.
  2. Chug that water!  Girl, stay hydrated.  Being dehydrated can be the only reason you’re in pain, so try to stay on top of your water intake daily.
  3. Find a cool, dark place.  My migraines come with an aura, so I get about a 30 minute warning.  At the first sign of migraine (aura) I pop an Excedrin Migraine and go find a cool, dark place to lay down.  I’ve found that if I do this immediately, I sometimes only get a mild headache.  If I wait too long, then the headache comes full force.  Being in a cool, dark room relaxes your eyes and keeps you calm.
  4. Turn down the volume.  Being in the quiet will dramatically help reduce the pain sometimes.
  5. Keep an ice pack on hand.  I’ve found that an ice pack placed on the base of my head/neck area really helps manage the pain.
  6. Invest in a steamer.  When my headaches are allergy or sinus related, I find that oftentimes I’m just really dried out.  Sitting under my steamer is such a relief during a bad headache or migraine.
  7. Rinse those passages!  If you’re suffering from allergy or sinus headaches, consider doing regular nasal passages.  As my allergist put it to me, we wash our bodies every day, but we never wash our nasal passages.  Think about all the dust, dirt and pollen we breathe in on the regular.  A nasal rinse can really help to keep those allergy headaches to a minimum.
  8. Olbas oil.  I’m a big believer in homeopathic medicine.  When I can, I use Olbas oil to treat my headaches instead of popping yet another painkiller.
  9. Watch your diet.  Have you noticed that your headaches or migraines come from certain triggers?  Maybe it’s only the week before your period?  Or maybe it’s when you skip your morning cup of coffee?  For me, I know MSG is a major trigger.  Consider journaling your headaches, what you did and ate the day before, and maybe you’ll begin to see a pattern form.

What are your headache tips and tricks?  I feel like I’ve tried just about anything and everything under the sun, these are just the things I’ve found that actually work for me.  Leave a comment and let me know how you treat your headaches.  Also, if you’re noticing more headaches than normal lately, go see your doctor.

Ways to Take Care of Yourself

I’m a firm believer in self-care.  We’ve been given one body, one opportunity to live this life.  Yet, we allow basically everything in our lives to take precedence over us.  If I were to ask my readers if they feel like they take adequate care of themselves, chances are that the majority of you would say no.  I get it, you’re busy.  We’re all busy.  It feels as though we’re living at a pace never before known to mankind, and maybe we are.  But here’s the thing: you only get one body.  One shot.  That’s it.

I’ve talked to several girlfriends who are wives and moms and are just worn out.  It’s almost always the same story, they can’t remember the last time they did something for themselves.  Life happens.  Jobs, kids, marriages, moves, family issues, they all happen.  We put ourselves on the back burner, then we literally burn ourselves out.

What if that didn’t have to happen?  What if we trained ourselves to carve out some “ME time” regardless of our hectic lives and schedules?  If we could achieve this, I’d venture to say that we’d all be happier, healthier and less-stressed.

When the opportunity arose for me to partner with Massage Envy to visit Scottsdale, AZ earlier this month, I was so excited.  I’m a firm believer in the services that they offer.

Massage Envy (ME) hosted an Influencer Summit and invited me out to learn more about the brand, their offerings and the new services coming soon.

I was able to sample their amazing new product selection consisting of essential oils, massage tools and facial care products.

Surprisingly, one of my highlights was being treated to this awesome Total Body Stretch session.  Total Body Stretch is a new service being offered by ME that can be selected as a stand-alone service or done in conjunction with a massage and will be launching mid-May across the country.  Total Body Stretch is literally that; stretching.  Except this is in a total professional, blood flow promoting, muscularly healthy, and also a feel good kind of way.  I’m the type of person who loves to get a workout from their massage.  I want to feel the pain of my knots (and I have a ton) being worked out.  I want to leave feeling like my body got a workout.  The Total Body Stretch provides the opportunity to really stretch out those muscles and helps to improve flexibility and mobility.  My tight calf muscles felt properly stretched for the first time since I started running.  I left my session feeling so much more calm than when I arrived and ready to take on more.

I also experienced their new chemical peel.  I’m no stranger to facial treatments.  I’m all about preventative treatment.  So many people start to do something about the signs of aging when they really notice changes.  Preventative treatments, such as chemical peels, will help to prevent that premature damage from occurring.

If you’re new to the world of massage and/or facial care, ME is truly a great option.  They have spas located all over the country.  If you’re a member, you’re able to use your membership at any of their locations while traveling (WIN for me!)

Ways to Take Care of Yourself

  • Exercise:  The best stress reliever.
  • Massage:  Works out your tension, your pain and your knots.
  • Facials:  When you look good, you feel good.  Beautiful makeup begins with beautiful skin.
  • Schedule alone time:  Carve out time to be alone so you can do whatever it is that you enjoy doing.  Maybe that’s reading a book or taking a nap.  Whatever it is, make yourself make time for yourself.
  • Eat good things:  Instead of looking at food as something to just shove down our throats to get us through the day, let’s look at food as fuel.  Food is what gives us the energy to operate, start paying better attention to what your daily fuel looks like.
  • Start a vitamin regimen.  Take the time to figure out which supplements are right for your body and start to implement them.
  • Drink water.  Put down the sodas and reach for water.
  • Get your sleep.  Try to create a sleep schedule and stick to it.  This is near impossible for new parents or travelers, but creating a schedule will help train your body for regular sleep.

Thank you to Massage Envy for partnering with me to create this post.  All opinions are my own.

Fresh New Life Goals for Spring

At this point, I’m as tired of apologizing for my absence from Hello Gorgeous as you probably are of hearing my “sorry’s”.  After a very transitional past two months (actually, more like past year) we are finally back home in LA and in our new home.  Here’s where the plot thickens…  We’re in a basically empty new home.  Someone had the bright idea of starting from scratch with the furniture since it was a new space.  Hint: it wasn’t Matt.

Anyways, I’ve been knee deep in wood, linen and rug samples, and quite honestly, I’m enjoying every second of it.  We’ve been in design mode since we arrived back home.  It’s really perfect timing when you think about it.  Personally, I associate Spring with fresh starts, new goals and clean slates.  Yes, that’s what New Years is all about, I know, but I never seem to really get motivated to start things up until the temperatures start to warm up.

I wanted to do a check in with my Gorgeous Girls about fresh, new goals for 2017.  Many of you set goals on January 1st, but many of your goals have changed in the past few months.  This is a great time to reassess what you realistically want to achieve over the course of this year.

What are my goals for 2017?  I’m so glad you asked!  I want to focus on our home.  I want to create a space that is warm, inviting and cozy.  With all of the traveling we do, I want our home to be our haven.  When we return to our house, I want to walk in the door, take a look around and uncontrollably sigh out of relief to be there.

I also want to make my health a priority.  I have barely exercised at all of the past year.  Honestly, it’s embarrassing.  Heart disease runs rampant in my family, so I can’t afford to not take care of myself.  I’ve been running with Matt the past couple of weeks and started doing yoga at home.  My goal isn’t to lose weight, but to be healthy and toned.

I try to make healthy choices about my diet pretty consistently (of course I like to splurge as well) but I want to buckle down even more this year.  I plan on including more fruits and veggies in our menu.  I share a lot of my recipes on Snapchat and Insta-Stories.  I recently posted a Healthy Breakfast Ideas YouTube video, so check that out if you missed it.  Let me know if you’d like to see a blog post or video about what I eat in a day or what’s in my fridge, as well as more recipes.

I plan to be more consistent with scheduling time for my daily devotions as well.  I have to remind myself that my body is my temple.  God gave me only one body and put me in charge of caring for it.

Let me know in the comments section what your goals are for the rest of 2017.  I’m considering sharing some of my home design process on my blog with y’all, so let me know if you’d like to see some of my design inspiration.
